Special preview day for NSU faculty, staff and students, and Museum members from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Guests Curator Richard Ellis speaks at 11:30 a.m. about the exhibition and signs copies of his book SHARK, Save Our Seas CEO's Georgina Wiersma and Peter Verhoog speak at 1:30 p.m. on the work they are doing to save shark populations worldwide, also followed by book signing.
Join us for opening day ceremonies, including a ribbon cutting at 9:30 a.m., showings of the film The Shark Riddle at 11 a.m. and 12 noon, story time featuring the book Desert Beneath the Sea and a book signing with 'Shark Lady' Dr Eugenie Clark at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., Gyotaku fish printing at the Academy, as well as face painting, and more fun activities. Meet Razor, the NSU Shark Mascot, as our exhibition opens to the public.

Students will be introduced to both native and tropical plants of our South Florida Region. The class will begin with the introduction of the basic plant habitats found throughout South Florida. The rest of the first day will be filled with plant walks representing the different habitats explored, so be sure to wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. Students will also be taught introductory planting design techniques, using plant material as the media to create various compositions.

Students will make a functional apron that also expresses their personality. Aprons can be humorous, beautiful, kitschy, practical, loud, or even avant garde. Basic sewing skills and pattern-making will be covered in this one day workshop. Fabric and additional materials will be required.

There are hundreds of examples of typography around you via magazines, billboards, packaging, ads, websites, etc. Let's explore typography to understand its appeal. Topics covered include anatomy and design of typefaces, font selection and usage. Exercises and projects will allow you to effectively use typography in your own work. Some experienc with Adobe programs is helpful.

Students will design their own pattern and print it on fabric to create a unique textile. The first day will cover the process of creating repeat unit using paper and pencil. The design will be transferred to Bristol board, where color and texture will be added. Day two will consist of transferring the design onto fabric and printing the final yardage.

This intensive will introduce students to Adobe InDesign, covering digital image sizes and resolution, file and document formats, workspaces, tools, objects, graphics, layouts, grids and guides, type, styles, and master pages. Students will leave with the knowledge to utilize these tools and techniques. Previous experience in Adobe programs is helpful.

Paper was orginally invented in A.D. 105. It is believed that the artists mixed plant fibers and rags with water, mashed it into a pulp, pressed out the liquid and hung it to dry in the sun. This two-day workshop will immerse the student in the creative process of making paper. In this introductory level workshop, participants will create their own paper using stenciling and pulp painting techniques. The finished pieces can function as works of art, or pages and covers for handmade sketchbooks and journals. All materials included; no experience necessary.

Students in this workshop will learn to address challenges and formulate strategies associated with making large-scale studio drawings. Students will learn about preparatory materials and explore the techniques and methods required for making large format drawings. Students will also critique examples of large-scale work from contemporary art.

Explore in-depth various marine life species to create highly detailed illustrations. A scientific illustration exhibits accuracy, is an idealized image to ensure easy identification across specimens, and has the inclusion of any distinct characteristics or various stages of the animal such as color variations or variations among males, females and juveniles within a species. Pencil will be used to capture as much detail as possible, then watercolor will be explored to add depth and realism. Sketchbook, camera, and additional materials will be required. Part of the class may meet on location.

This workshop will begin with drawing, emphasizing geature and quick studies on paper. After compiling an abudance of gesture drawings, we will resolve how to translate them into textile designs. Using surface design treatments, embelishment techniques and machine sewing skills, students will transfer their drawings onto cloth while keeping gesture and mark making in mind. A layed, collaged, and improvised approach will be emphasized in the textile design.

A 3-hour workshop in the Museum galleries for families with chilren ages 6 and up using artwork as inspiration, families wil create a piece of art relating to an exhibition viewed at the Museum. This is a hands-on workshop for children and their adult companions and takes place once a month for four months. When registering, please use separate forms for each person or child attending.

This workshop will cover softening and blending of the skin to reduce or eliminate wrinkles and blemishes, adjusting hair color or skin tone, creating dynamic lighting and adjusting overall color. Some experience in Adobe Photoshop is helpful.

In this workshop, students will create a handmade book. Watercolor paper, fine art papers and fabric will be used to create a book, journal or album. The size and ambition of this piece will be up to you. Learn how to create a book using traditional binding techniques while experience demonstrations of additional techniques and paper making.
