Curriculum
Art Classes are structured with sequential lessons. Classes are kept small with an instructor to ensure one-on-one instruction time for each student. Instructors are chosen for their dedication to education in the visual arts and their own particular strengths as artists. All grades are skills-based, designed to impart the greatest amount of technical training and exploration of materials suitable for the grade level. We challenge students to be creative while giving them the tools necessary to realize their visions.
The following is an outline of the curriculum for each class.

FIGURE DRAWING (INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED)
Understanding the figure and its expansiveness, the development of confidence, personal freedom, expression, and sound drawing skill. Issues of proportion, anatomy, and structure of the human form are covered. Individual and group critiques.

PAINTING – PORTRAIT (INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED)
Painting class devoted to observational painting of the portrait. Individual and group critiques. This course offers structural painting of the head and its character. Emphasis on complex paint manipulation and qualities of the face and expression. In-class lectures on medium and materials cover paint (intermediate palette), surfaces, brushes, and processes in the studio.

WATERCOLOR (INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED)
A painting course using the medium of transparent watercolor. This course offers an extensive exploration of how watercolor works. Using line, layering, and fusion, the student examines figure, still life, and landscape with transparent watercolor wash. In-class lectures on medium and materials cover paint (intermediate palette), paper, brushes, and processes in the studio.

INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING (BEGINNER)
This course offers an extensive exploration of how acrylic paints are used. Using line, layering, and fusion, the student examines figure, still life, and landscape with transparent and opaque applications. In-class lectures on medium and materials cover paint (intermediate palette), surfaces, brushes, and processes in the studio.

PAINTING (INTERMEDIATE)
Fundamental techniques of oil painting including paint handling, surface preparation, color mixing, and self-expression are emphasized through progressive exercises that are designed to meet the needs of multiple skill levels. Students will learn organization of the picture plane to develop preparation and compositional skills through the use of color, value, and texture.

TWO-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN (INTERMEDIATE)
Study and exercises in shape, line, space, hue, chroma, and texture with reference to two-dimensional forms. Abstract concepts that lead to more dynamic representational composition. Emphasis on creative design. Special attention is given to expressiveness, media, and materials.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN (INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED)
The study of three-dimensional form in space; conceptual and aesthetic response to fundamental knowledge of shape in line, plane, and volume in spatial relationships. Experimentation in a variety of materials.

COLOR CONCEPT
Lectures discuss the application of color beyond theory. They deal with the inseparable factors of hue, value, and chroma in order to develop intellectual and visual sensitivity. Sequential assignments follow from the lectures and move from simple monochromatic problems to those more complex.

STRUCTURAL DRAWING (BEGINNER)
Structural drawing theories are delivered through a series of exercises concerning visual perception of objects as they appear in space. Lectures develop and clarify the perspective principles to which drawing relates. The course covers general principles: one-, two-, and three-point perspective; compound forms; shadows from natural and artificial sources; and reflections.

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT (BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED)
Exploring drawings as the backbone of successful college admission portfolios. Students will work on completing quality drawings through still life and extended model poses. Assignments are geared toward portfolio requirements. Presentation of drawings, how to organize a portfolio, and strategies for an outstanding portfolio will be presented.

DRAWING – MIXED MEDIA (BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED)
Development of drawing ideas in a variety of drawing media with emphasis on the use of materials and manipulations.
